System Administrator – Won contract

The Department of National Defence (DND) requires the professional services of System Administrator with experience in supporting virtualization and cloud technologies to support the Exercise and Simulation (E&S) branch of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Aerospace Warfare Centre (AWC), located on the Shirley’s Bay Campus in Ottawa, ON. The successful bidder will support the development, operation and sustainment of the E&S-managed Defence Secure Simulation and Training Node infrastructure (DSSTNi) Information System (IS), specifically through providing user-focused system administration.

Mandatory requirements

• Over 5 years of experience within the past 10 years, from date of bid closing performing installation, upgrade, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems on physical and virtual computers
• Over 5 years of experience within the past 10 years, from date of bid closing performing installation, configuration and troubleshooting of virtualization solutions
• Over 5 years of experience within the past 10 years, from date of bid closing performing installation, upgrade, configuration and maintenance of physical hardware on the network
• Over 5 years of experience within the past 10 years, from date of bid closing performing installation, upgrade, configuration and maintenance of user and group specific software over the network
• Over 5 years of experience within the past 10 years, from date of bid closing performing backup and recovery of information systems including for individual machines and complete data centres
• Over 5 years of experience within the past 10 years, from date of bid closing performing first line troubleshooting support for network infrastructure, connected hardware, and packaged software

Optional requirements

• Two or more of the following certifications, or previously awarded equivalents:

  Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP)

• Experience employing 2 or more of the following core system technologies:

• Appreciable (5+ years) experience employing 2 or more of the following storage and backup technologies:
  Network Attached Storage (NAS)
  Random Array of Independent Disks (RAID)
  Network File System (NFS)
  Samba file sharing
  Veeam for ESXi
  VMWare Virtual Machine File System (VMFS)
  Virtual Machine Backup and Restore
• Appreciable (5+ years) experience administrating 2 or more of the following Operating System technologies:
  Microsoft Windows 10/11
  Microsoft Windows Server 2016/2019/2022
  Ubuntu Linux
  VMWare ESXi 6.0/6.7/7/8 Series
• Experience (3+ years) administering one or more of the following software products in a networked or cloud environment:
  Matlab
  AGI STK
  

General tasks

• Install and configure DSSTNi system software and hardware;
• Install and configure client system software within the DSSTNi cloud;
• Manage DSSTNi network appliances and servers;
• Manage client system virtual network appliances and servers;
• Setup user accounts and build and allocate required virtual machines;
• Monitor DSSTNi and client system performance;
• Perform routine maintenance of DSSTNi and client system;
• Troubleshoot technical issues and system outages;
• Backup and restore critical DSSTNi systems and data;
• Support testing of new system software releases for use within the DSSTNi cloud;
• Deploy new software releases for use within the DSSTNi cloud; and
• Other system and network administration-related tasks, as requested by the TA and agreed to by the contracted resource.
